| William Morris Gallery gets lottery funding
The William Morris Gallery has been successful with its initial lottery bid for £80,000 enabling the Council to to plan the development of the Gallery. With no-one on board with knowledge of William Morris or the collection let us hope the Council has the vision, knowledge and expertise to realise the potential of the Gallery - the danger is that the Council will dumb it down into a generic arts centre - so whilst the news is a potentially positive move forwards, it's crucial to remain vigilant and keep the pressure on the Council. More Council consultation.... The council are undertaking a series of consultancies about the state of culture in the Borough, following the highly critcal resport published entitled A Risk Worth Taking (PDF of report) which was commissioned by the outgoing Cheif Executive of Waltham Forest Council. Tto quote the report directly, "a casual visitor could be forgiven for thinking that LBWF does not value the arts or see them as an important part of the life of the community". Email Clive Morton if you'd like to be invited to a consultation. Other local news Meeting to debate the future of the Borough's last remaining cinema - 29 March A public meeting will be held on 29 March to discuss the council’s latest plans for the EMD Cinema after it was revealed that the Council have been in secret talks with the UKCG church about turning the cinema into a church again! Council borrowing £35 million from taxpayers It's emerged also this week that the Council want to borrow £35 million from taxpayers to pay for the development at the top of Walthamstow market, please see the following reports of the story.
