Artforum - Have your sayThe Art Fund have launched an online forum to post messages about ‘Attitudes towards local museums’. To post comments please visit their website.

Firstly, thank you all for attending the Friends AGM last night. It swiftly became apparent that any attempts that we made even to outline the extraordinary and complex negotiations, protests and actions that we have taken over the last six months, would be futile. I would like to reassure every single one of you that we have been intensely ‘fighting’ these cuts every hour of every day since they were published on January 4, 2007. Let me assure you that all of the wonderful inspired ideas that were thrown onto the floor last night HAVE been tried. I was only sorry that there wasn’t time to address each individual point. However, your ideas are essential so please all of you feel free to contact me with any idea or query that you might have, and I will answer you in detail, explaining exactly what we have done, when we have done it, and what the results were. And, if we haven’t tried it, rest assured we will. Do not even think that for one second we will take our eye off the game. Our immediate priorities may have changed, but we all share the same goal.My email address is: nineteenthcentury@btopenworld.com

Many many thanks for your continued and invaluable support.

Helen Smith, Hon. Secretary of the Friends of the William Morris Gallery

This week, the Audit Commission is looking at cultural provisions in the borough of Waltham Forest.

They will look at libraries, art, sport, and parks to see what facilities are available, their effectiveness and value for money.

Although this visit is concentrating on Libraries, it may be a good time to write to the audit commission drawing their attention to the £56,000 cuts to William Morris Gallery and Vestry House Museum which will see their opening hours slashed and their future put in jeopardy.

If you feel that this is not an effective saving, please write to the audit commission emphasising the importance of keeping the museum and gallery open and actually investing in these resources.

If you have already written to the Council, please state this in your emails.

Emails should be send to c-bryce-smith@audit-commission.gov.uk and copied to gcomninos@deloitte.co.uk

Thursday, 7th June, The Friends of the William Morris Gallery are meeting for the Annual General Meeting. Please note that this meeting will NOT be held at the Gallery but at the Greenleaf Road Baptist Church. Greenleaf Road is just off Hoe Street, almost opposite the Rose and Crown public house, ten minutes walk from Walthamstow Central.(i.e. the same venue as the very well supported public meeting held on Thursday, 25th January). I would urge you to attend in order that we can acquaint you with up-to-date developments and future proposals. We also wish to receive feedback from you, the membership - many of whom have been so very supportive.
